Business Intelligence Analyst

Job Description

The Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst role is to select, blueprint, gather requirements, design, and roll out reporting and BI solutions to end users. The role is responsible for ensuring high levels of SSRS and Power BI reports and BI availability through support functions and in-depth testing. This position will also require supporting the Master data team.

 

Duties Include

Strategy & Planning: 

  • Define the current reporting activities for the development of existing and future reporting procedures and models by charting existing processes
  • In conjunction with data owners and business units, develop models, procedures, and protocols for reporting in concert with company goals
  • Research, review, and analyse the effectiveness and efficiency of existing report procedures and develop strategies for enhancing or further leveraging these processes
  • Develop routines and procedures for end-users to facilitate best practices use of reporting tools and applications

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Assist in research and make recommendations on standards in support of procurement and development efforts
  • Communicate reporting changes, enhancements, and modifications – verbally or through written documentation, to management and other employees so that issues and solutions are understood

Operational Management

  • Meet with decision makers, systems owners, and end users to define reporting and BI requirements and goals
  • Participate in the integration efforts for merging BI platforms with enterprise systems and applications
  • Design, code, test, and document all new or modified reports and BI systems, applications, and programs
  • Assist in the design of databases and data warehouses to ensure interoperability with reporting and BI solutions
  • Analyse user requirements and based on findings, design functional specifications for reports and BI front-end applications
  • Produce ETL design guidelines to ensure a manageable ETL infrastructure for the BI system
  • Conduct job duties and responsibilities according to the organization’s business systems development methodology and/or its Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology
  • Design and deliver end-user training and training materials; provide technical support as necessary
  • Troubleshoot reporting and BI tools, systems, and software; performance-tune these applications as necessary
  • Act as evangelist for reporting and BI benefits across the organization; promote report and BI usage to relevant departments

Person Specification:

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science, information systems, or computer engineering
  • 3-5 years of Experience developing reports in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • 3-5 years of Experience developing/managing databases in SQL Server 2016+
  • 3-5 years of Experience developing ETL’s in Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Knowledge of relational databases
  • Ability to write and execute SQL queries
  • Experience in creating analytics tools, reports, or dashboards for business stakeholders in Power BI
  • knowledge of API protocols and schemas such as SOAP and REST
  • Strong ability to analyse user requirements and build front-end BI reports and applications according to specifications
  • Working Knowledge of at least one programming language such as C#, Python and or Java
  • Experience with source control such as Bitbucket
  • Strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices
  • Experience with data processing flowcharting techniques
  • Strong understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives
  • Good knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws

Additional Considerations

  • May require working on weekends
  • Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment
  • Some physical effort required (i.e., some lifting of supplies and material)
  • Long hours sitting and operating office equipment (e.g. photocopier, computer mouse, keyboard) and computers
  • Some exposure to a warehouse environment
